Là où le sol pousse is a multidisciplinary exploration of the living world beneath our feet. Developed during a residency across five distinct French environments—agricultural, urban, vineyard, forest, and volcanic—Anaïs Tondeur investigates the soil as a complex and vibrant community, bringing together environmental art, science, and experimental image-making.
The book unfolds through two visual approaches. “Chromatographies” are created directly from physical soil samples on mulberry paper, translating the earth’s chemical composition into abstract images. In the “Cosmographies,” celestial maps printed on dark paper are reimagined, with stars replaced by microorganisms and heavy metals found beneath the surface.
Accompanied by texts in French and English, including contributions by writers and scientists such as Érik Orsenna and Marc-André Selosse, Tondeur’s work invites us to reconsider our relationship with the earth—not as a passive surface, but as a living environment whose unseen processes connect the microscopic and the cosmic.
