Dinaane, Ditoro and the Imagining of the Otherwise is a striking photographic project by Tshepiso Moropa, exploring South African folklore, memory, and the possibilities of visual imagination. Its title draws on the Setswana words for traditional folktales (dinaane) and dreams (ditoro).
Working through intricate photomontage and digital collage, Moropa reconstructs archival portraiture, vintage studio photography, and symbolic animal imagery into surreal, dreamlike compositions. Human figures, animals, and fragments of historical imagery are brought together in unexpected scenes, creating a visual world in which the boundaries between reality, memory, and myth remain fluid.
Drawing on Setswana oral traditions, the photographs revisit stories of river goddesses, magical bird messengers, and other fantastical encounters. These narratives provide a point of departure for Moropa’s visual investigation of Black identity, female agency, and historical memory beyond the colonial archive.
Combining archival material with contemporary image-making, the book creates an imaginative space where inherited stories and visual histories can be reconfigured and seen otherwise.
