Description
Solu u mari u sapi (Only the Sea Knows) is a long-term photographic project by Giovanni Benvenuto, begun in 2020, exploring the lives of the fishing community of Portopalo di Capo Passero, a small coastal town at the southernmost tip of Sicily.
Through an intimate and attentive approach, Benvenuto documents the everyday lives of fishermen, moving beyond the boundaries of their profession to explore their personal relationships, moments of leisure, aspirations, and the rhythms that shape life in this coastal community.
The sea is both a workplace and a constant presence, deeply intertwined with the identity and experiences of those who live alongside it. The photographs reveal a world suspended between tradition and change, where the sea holds memories, stories, and an uncertain future.
As the narrative unfolds, the book gradually moves towards a more nocturnal and dreamlike dimension, offering a different perspective on the relationship between the community and its surrounding landscape.
Solu u mari u sapi is an intimate portrait of a place and its people, a story of belonging, memory, and the enduring bond between human life and the sea.
