Set between New York and Montreal, 1996 is an autobiographical memoir revisiting Richard Renaldi’s experience of the AIDS epidemic and the early promise of combination therapies. Through photographs and personal recollections, Renaldi returns to a turbulent period of his life, marked by an intense relationship with his boyfriend, queer nightlife, and the experience of receiving an HIV-positive diagnosis.
The book brings together memories of love, intimacy, and loss against the cultural landscape of the mid-1990s, when the emergence of new treatments began to change the course of the epidemic. Looking back from the present, Renaldi recounts his relationship and reflects on the people and experiences that shaped those years. Combining photography and autobiographical writing, 1996 offers a personal account of life, relationships, and survival during a pivotal moment in the history of HIV/AIDS.
