Eugen Recomposed is a new artist’s book by Edouard Taufenbach and Bastien Pourtout, developed from their work around the photographic archive of Eugen Sandow.
The project revisits the images of Eugen Sandow, the famous German bodybuilder whose carefully constructed physique became one of the iconic representations of the male body at the end of the nineteenth century.
Working with historical photographs, Taufenbach and Pourtout transform and recompose the original images, treating the body not simply as a photographic subject but as an image to be fragmented, layered and reconstructed.
Through this process of recomposition, the historical photographs become the starting point for a contemporary reflection on the representation of the body, masculinity and the construction of the photographic image.
Eugen Recomposed takes the archive as raw material and explores the distance between the historical image and its contemporary perception, creating a new visual vocabulary from Sandow’s iconic body.
